Mahatma Jyotirao Phule located Shivaji Maharaj's samadhi at Raigad in 1869 and organised the first public Shiv Jayanti in Pune in 1870. Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak later established the Shri Shivaji Fund Committee in 1895, turning the observance into a large-scale public festival.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was born at Shivneri Fort, near Junnar in Pune district, on 19 February 1630.

A Shobha Yatra is the grand procession held on Shiv Jayanti — featuring Dhol-Tasha Pathaks, lezim, mardani khel (martial arts), a mounted Shivaji tableau and saffron flags. The Lal Mahal to Shaniwar Wada procession in Pune is especially well known.

The official date is 19 February every year — 2028 (Saturday), 2029 (Monday), 2030 (Tuesday). The tithi-based date changes annually and should be checked against a panchang.
