The Coronation

Shivaji was crowned at Raigad, assuming the title 'Chhatrapati' and proclaiming a sovereign Hindavi Swarajya.

The rites were performed by Pandit Gaga Bhatt of Kashi. Shivaji established his own coinage (the Shivrai), the royal seal, an administrative lexicon and the Ashtapradhan council of eight ministers — a model of good governance.
